Cave drawings and some early sculptures, by Women?

There is a great tumbler post talking about the recent research showing that many cave drawings and some early scultures were done by women. The concept that these sculptures are accurate from the perspective of a person looking down (taking a selfie) is particularly awesome. NSFW for nudity, but click through for more info!

Quotas

Quotas are ugly things, and nobody should have to deal with them. via upworthy

Sometimes you see backlash about female quotas from men, and I think it’s important to realize that quotas are the wrong way to approach things. It’s not about putting a body in there, it’s about finding qualified individuals in a non-narrow selective way. Nowhere is this more true than in the Technical Conference circuit, where the culture, mindset and approval just won’t find or hire qualified women speakers. This is starting to change, and thankfully the conversation is now shifting from “we need x women on the panels” to “how can we make this an environment women won’t hate to be in and will actually attend or want to speak at”.

Slut Shaming

Trigger warning: Rape

This is a topic that comes up fairly often, and I find it sad that we have to bring out the extreme examples to make the point to someone. Who someone sleeps with, for whatever reasons, is just none of your business, and you have no business commenting or judging them for it. It’s a personal choice between two consenting adults.

The video obviously touches on situations where that isn’t so, and where society still treats you like shit. It also talks about something we do so little in today’s society, which is step in. So yeah, look out for one another, for strangers even, and do the right thing.

Restore Our Anthem

Restore Our Anthem is a petition to restore the Canadian National Anthem “O Canada!” to it’s 1908 original version, which said “thou dost in us command”, but was changed in 1913 to “In all thy sons command”. While the later might be more current English, it did change the meaning rather drastically. Changing this to “in all of us command” makes a lot of sense to me. Click through for a nice video they put together (though it does lack an example modified anthem). Let me know what you think in the comments bellow!

Is this what respect feels like

We take pride in saying that geek and nerd culture is a haven for those mistreated, that we will accept you, and treat you right. Unless you’re a woman. Then the reality is not what it appears. This comic by Paige Hall reminds us that we have a hell of a ways to go. via SandrineD

Menstruating Shirt

Screen Shot 2013-10-08 at 12.17.10 PM

Hot on the heels of the cervix photo essay comes this interview with Petra Collins on a t-shirt for American Apparel depicting a masturbating, menstruating, hairy, vagina. People are calling it all kinds of things, as you can imagine. NSFW obviously. I think the image is fine, and don’t think any part of it is gross, but I’m not sure I’d wear something like that around town.

My friend Petra Collins-who has done all sorts of wonderful photography work for VICE, along with the all-female art collective she founded and curates, The Ardorous-caused an incredibly entertaining storm of controversy this week.

RE: Miley Cyrus

So Sinéad O’Connor wrote an open letter to Miley Cyrus. It’s interesting in that “here is your role model telling you that you are going down the wrong path”.

But then Amanda Palmer got into the ring and wrote one to Sinéad. One of the most interesting conversations I’ve read in a long time.

an open letter to sinéad o’connor, re: miley cyrus.Sinéad O’Connor wrote a letter to Miley Cyrus, you can read it here: bit.ly/SOColMC (or HERE on The Guardian if her site’s down from heavy traffic) This is my letter back to Sinéad. Dear Sinéad, I love you. I grew up worshipping your music and your bold attitude and, especially, your refusal to sign up to the bullshit beauty standard.

Being Sexually Submissive Doesn’t Mean I’m Weak

Being Sexually Submissive Doesn’t Mean I’m WeakIf you were to ever meet me in my daily travels, the word “submissive” is likely the last thing that would come to mind to describe me. I am fiercely independent, strong willed, and extremely outspoken. I am a feminist, an activist, and a mother.

These things are not mutually exclusive. This is especially true of men too, where the societal expectation is that you will be dominant. It’s also important to draw a line between everyday interaction and bedroom behaviour. What someone does consensually in the bedroom is personal, and should not affect how society treats them. click on the link above for the article.
